As I know, A/B testing is look like: you have two versions of an element and a metric that defines which’s better. To determine which version is better, you subject both versions to experimentation simultaneously. In the end, you measure which version was more successful and select that version for deployed on PROD.
For example:
” You have two designs of a website: X and Y. Typically, X is the existing design , and Y is the new design. You split your website traffic between these two versions and measure their performance using metrics that you care about (conversion rate,sign up rate, login rate, etc.). In the end, you select the version that performs best.”.
In my real case, when I plan to do A/B testing between search function version 1 and search function version 2, I need tool to support the measure. Here is “Piwik”, to collect data how often user uses for v1 and how often user uses for v2. From that, we can get feedback to decide which’s version is better.
Any idea is welcome.

I think Phuoc’s answer is quite clear. The idea behind A/B testing is to make sure we build the right thing that converts.
