I have started a job as a Website Tester where my role includes UAT testing – black box testing. I am the only tester here with around 6 developers. I am not a technical tester whatsoever. This is my first ever role and it has been over 6 months now. I have managed to learn some SQL (Joins, nothing too spectacular), how to use Redmine bug tracking system and basics of creating test scenarios and perform UAT testing.
I now have PDR review this week and I would like to request some professional training as I feel like i know nothing about technical stuff. I dont want dig too deep into technical testing but I could do with basics. What kind of things should i learn to ensure i can get as much coverage in testing as possible? I dont get time to teach my self a lot because I am working on a lot of projects at once. I would like to get some hands on training somewhere, or attend any seminars, etc. I would like to know what tools i can use, what is the best test case management tool (using spreadsheet right now!), researching into Test Case by Redmine and PraciTest. I want to know how to write better test cases, think of more testing scenarios but I feel out of place amongst all technical people. I would also want an automation tool but LeapTest seems better for me as it doesnt require programming? I need to tell my manager what training i want but no idea what do suggest!
What should i learn and what should i not?! i am so confused?
@pnidhi
I see you asked several questions in your question. I’ll try to answer them:
Re: What kind of things should i learn to ensure i can get as much coverage in testing as possible?
>First off, why you think you need to improve your test coverage? In other words, why you think the current coverage is not enough.
Just see testing coverage as a map. If you want to increase the coverage, you need to time and resource to help you go further and wider. Anyway, here are some ideas:
* Automate your regression test suite so that you can have more time to test more
* Consider what other important cases to test
* Add more resource to your team so you can test more
Re: I dont get time to teach my self a lot because I am working on a lot of projects at once. I would like to get some hands on training somewhere, or attend any seminars
> For hands-on training, I recommend you research on training in where you live. This will help you to meet people and get the training you needed. If can’t find one at where you live, you can research online course to learn (Udemy is one of recommended resource when it comes to online learning)
Re: I would like to know what tools i can use, what is the best test case management tool (using spreadsheet right now!), researching into Test Case by Redmine and PraciTest
> Check out what tool works best for your project. Pick one and go with it. Don’t be overthinking things
Re: I want to know how to write better test cases, think of more testing scenarios but I feel out of place amongst all technical people
> I don’t understand why having technical people around you prevents you from writing better test cases.
Re: I would also want an automation tool but LeapTest seems better for me as it doesnt require programming? I need to tell my manager what training i want but no idea what do suggest!
> As I mentioned above, just pick up a tool that you think it fits you well and start from there. You can always change the tool when needed, so don’t worry about this much.
If your boss does support you with training, do some researches and look for training that serves your project first. By doing this, you will have more chance to get approval from your boss
Goodluck to you and happy testing.
