freelance on utest

hello asktester staff,

i am currently enrolled in a software testing certificate course at villanova. i will take my istqb exam in december and get certified. my goal is to work full-time remotely as a software tester. I am planning on joining all of the crowdsource testing sites and beginning to find as many projects as I can. However, I have no professional testing experience as of now. Is it possible for someone to work fulltime as a crowdsource or freelance tester? Am I better off trying to find a normal 9-5 remotely? If you have any advice I would really appreciate it thanks

    Hi Alex,

Look like you have a good plan for your goal.

Re: However, I have no professional testing experience as of now. Is it possible for someone to work fulltime as a crowdsource or freelance tester?

It’s definitely possible to work fulltime as crowdsource or freelance tester. Having less to no can be challenging to the quality of your work (e.g.: you may not find a lot of bugs or you may not write good test cases, etc) but it may not become a barrier for you to get involved/invited for projects.

Please note that one of the important reasons why people look for crowdsource testers is that they want to look for a large number of testers having a various devices models that would be expensive if the equip by themselves. With that said, your skills/experience plays role but the number or the variance of device under test play a more important role here.

Regarding the path of “normal 9-5 remotely”, to be honest, I don’t know anyone does that remotely but I’m pretty sure there would be a need for that. You may want to search on freelance site and see if people post jobs like that. However, I don’t think the need for it as much as crowdsource testers.

With that said, I recommend to give crowdsource test a try. Make sure to prepare as many as devices/models as possible to increase your chance of being invited.

Finally, the same as any jobs, be prepared to work hard. You’ll find it difficult in the beginning, but if you’re consistent and work hard, you’ll be paid-off.

Let me know when you earn your first $

    Cheers,
